The Victorian Transport Industry Safety Group has released a new set of guidelines to help operators, drivers and technicians make sure a truck breakdown site is safe for their staff and the general public.

The Truck Emergency Breakdown and Road Safety Guidelines sets out a checklist of factors involved in a truck breakdown, as well as the steps that should be taken to address them.

These steps are divided into three stages: preparations an operator should have in place in case of a truck breakdown, actions the driver should take during the breakdown event and points to consider when carrying out safe emergency roadside repairs.

In addition to the checklists, the guidelines include photos of recommended vehicle positions, correct placements of advance warning triangles and appropriate night visibility.

The steering committee that developed the guidelines was led by Tony Kopestenski from WorkSafe Victoria and ATA councillor Simon Skazlic from K&S Freighters.
