Celebrations underway for TruckWeek 2014

01 September 2014

Celebrations are now underway in communities across Australia for TruckWeek 2014, a week of trucking industry events from 1-7 September 2014.

The trucking industry employs more than 170,000 truck drivers and transports more than 70 percent of Australia’s domestic freight, including every item on the shelves of each supermarket. TruckWeek brings the industry together to celebrate its achievements and build closer ties with the community.

On a national level, the Australian Trucking Association has organised a delegation program at Parliament House, inviting senior politicians to meet with trucking industry figures to discuss major issues affecting the trucking industry.

In NSW, TruckWeek kicks off this morning with a free BBQ for drivers in Port Botany run by ATANSW, the Sydney Truck Centre, Workcover and the rt health fund. NSW Roads and Freight Minister Duncan Gay will also help out behind the hotplate as a celebrity sausage sizzler.

In Warwick, Qld, the entire town has come together to celebrate the industry, with local operators, emergency services and community representatives taking part in a truck parade through the main street on Friday. During the week, the Warwick police will hand out free raffle tickets to truck drivers passing through the town, while the Warwick Daily News will run daily road safety tips and truck colouring in competitions.

TruckWeek is also on TV, with animated road safety tips showing on the WIN network and BP’s Pump TV nationally. The videos can also be viewed on the ATA’s YouTube channel, AustralianTrucking.

Trucking operators Chappo’s Transport and Formula Chemicals are heading back to school for TruckWeek, hosting truck displays and free BBQs at their local public schools. ATA Chair Noelene Watson has also opened the Don Watson Transport Bacchus Marsh depot to local senior students.

Mrs Watson invited every Australian to find their nearest TruckWeek event and use the opportunity to find out more about the trucking industry.

“Trucks carry the goods you use every day, but a lot of people aren’t aware of the incredible work the industry puts into making sure these goods are moved in a safe and professional manner, day and night,” Mrs Watson said.

“During TruckWeek, it’s time for the industry to celebrate what we do and show Australia how trucking delivers.”

TruckWeek events are taking place in every state and territory, from Parliament House in Canberra to Alice Springs and beyond. For more information and to find your closest event, go to www.truckweek.com.au.
