ATA NSW announces Port Botany TruckWeek celebration

22 June 2012

ATA NSW, the rt health fund and the Sydney Ports Corporation, along with TWU Super and Patrick Stevedores, will join together to celebrate TruckWeek 2012 with a free sausage sizzle and health checks for truck drivers at Port Botany from 7-8am on 20-24 August.

The celebrity sausage sizzlers will include Grant Gilfillan, CEO and Director and Sydney Ports, and ATA NSW Manager Jill Lewis, who will listen to what drivers have to say about the port facilities and other issues.

Mr Gilfillan said that he looked forward to hearing drivers’ opinions about the port and any issues they have at first hand.

“Port Botany sees a huge number of trucks through the gates every day. The trucking industry is an essential part of port operations, and TruckWeek is the perfect time to acknowledge this,” Mr Gilfillan said.

“This event provides us with a great opportunity to speak directly with drivers about their jobs and any issues they may have – these are the people at the coal face and their opinions are very important to helping us all drive greater efficiencies in port supply chain and logistics.”

Meanwhile, Dr Jui Tham, Chief Medical Officer for the rt health fund, will carry out free health checks for drivers during the sausage sizzle as a special contribution to TruckWeek.

“Driver health is of paramount importance to the industry, but all too often drivers don’t have time to get their health checked,” Dr Tham said.
“As our contribution, rt health fund will conduct healthy heart checks for drivers, including blood pressure tests, BMI measurements and respiratory function tests.”

ATA NSW Manager Jill Lewis said TruckWeek 2012 was the perfect opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of the 220,000 drivers and other employees in the industry.

“Our industry is full of safe, professional and responsible employees. TruckWeek is a time to tell Australia how the trucking industry and our employees deliver for Australia,” Ms Lewis said.

TruckWeek 2012 will run from 19 – 25 August, and will enable every trucking business to run or take part in a local industry event. For more information, go to the TruckWeek website at www.truckweek.com.au.
