Federal Transport Minister to speak at Trucking Australia 2016

04 May 2016

The Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Darren Chester, will deliver a keynote address at the trucking industry’s leading safety and business event, Trucking Australia 2016.

Trucking Australia 2016 will be held at the Sea World Resort on the Gold Coast from Thursday 23 to Saturday 25 June.

ATA CEO Christopher Melham said he was delighted to welcome Minister Chester to the lineup of top speakers at the event.

“Trucking Australia 2016 will be held just one week before the federal election on 2 July. Mr Chester’s speech will be an opportunity for delegates to hear about the Government’s policies on road safety and building stronger trucking businesses,” Mr Melham said.

“Last night, as part of the budget, Mr Chester announced a series of measures to deliver real improvements in road safety, including $40 million per year from 2019-20 for the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. The HVSPP funds rest areas and productivity improvements that support the trucking industry.

“The budget also confirmed that the Government will transfer $15.6 million over four years from the former RSRT to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to fund practical safety measures,” Mr Melham said.

Mr Chester was appointed as Minister for Infrastructure and Transport in February 2016. He has a long standing interest in road safety. In 2014, he jointly established the bipartisan Parliamentary Friends of Road Safety group.

In addition to top speakers like Darren Chester, Trucking Australia 2016 will include a contracts masterclass about what trucking businesses need to look for as they review contracts.

The masterclass will feature the launch of the ATA’s new contract checklist. Using the checklist, delegates will work through a hypothetical industry contract, identify potential problems and find out how to fix them.

Delegates will also contribute to the ATA’s future policies, as they work to develop industry action plans on safety and business viability.

Full delegate registration for Trucking Australia 2016 is just $495 (inc GST). On-site accommodation is available at the 4½ star Sea World Resort, with special delegate rates starting from $169 per room per night.
