Constructive conversation towards potential road safety outcomes

19 March 2019

The Australian Trucking Association has joined transport industry representatives at Parliament House for the Labor Party’s Transport Industry Standards Forum.

The ATA represents the 50,000 businesses and 200,000 people in the Australian trucking industry.

Hosted by Shadow Minister for Road Safety Senator Glenn Sterle, the forum explored ways to improve standards and safety outcomes in road transport.

“The ATA was delighted to join Senator Sterle’s forum and have the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation,” ATA Chair Geoff Crouch said today.

Joining Mr Crouch to represent the trucking industry was ATA CEO Ben Maguire, owner-driver Chris Howard and the owner of Fellows Bulk Transport, Paul Fellows.

“The forum brought together an extremely diverse range of industry participants, providing a platform for positive discussion,” Mr Crouch said.

“It was very encouraging to see everybody proactively contributing to one central goal: to improve safety outcomes.” he said.

The forum discussed challenges within the transport industry, transport policy and the next steps necessary to improve road transport standards, conditions and safety outcomes.

“We look forward to continuing the discussion with Senator Sterle and his colleagues,” Mr Crouch said.

Owner-driver Chris Howard said while there were some different agendas in the room, everyone was on the same team.

“It would be great to have a combined effort incorporating drivers, employers and suppliers that benefits the industry as a whole,” Mr Howard said.
