ATA advocates 'Towards Zero' safety culture

05 March 2018

The ATA advocates for implementation of an ambitious Towards Zero safety culture through the next National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS).

A Towards Zero culture promotes that the only acceptable road safety target to reach for is zero. As per a safe systems approach to road safety a Towards Zero strategy incorporates developments in safe roads, safe vehicles, safe speeds and safe people.

Target setting is essential to this philosophy and the ATA has recommended that governments move away from the traditional 10 year strategy and implement a more aspirational five year plan.

The ATA’s submission to the inquiry includes 19 recommendations in total including; creation of an independent National Road Safety Commission, appropriate funding of targeted education and communication around sharing the road safely with trucks and that the Australian Transport Safety Bureau provide independent , no-blame, safety investigations for road crashes involving heavy vehicles.
