Safety key for TruckWeek 2012

21 August 2012

Events continue around Queensland in celebration of national TruckWeek, which runs until this Saturday.

Safety is a high priority for the trucking industry and its professional drivers, who share their workplace with thousands of motorists every day. The fatal crash rate for articulated trucks has decreased by more than 60 per cent since 1982, but the range of safety-focussed TruckWeek events across the country shows the industry is determined to keep improving.

Armesto’s Transport and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland have invited operators from the Brisbane North/ Sunshine Coast region to join the Transport Industry Network Group as part of their TruckWeek celebrations. The network aims to improve industry communication in the area of safety by promoting information sharing between all sectors of transport, logistics and the supply chain across the State.

The Kinetic Health Gold Coast clinic is offering discounted health assessments during TruckWeek to keep our truckies fit, healthy, and safe in the workplace.

Mann’s Transport has taken out a page of the Goondiwindi Argus to display the Truckie’s top ten tips, which detail techniques that car drivers can use to stay safe on the road around trucks. Meanwhile, the Mackay Road Accident Action Group will use TruckWeek to get road safety information out to its members and into the media.

ATA Chairman David Simon said he encouraged everyone to attend a TruckWeek event near them and think about how they can help make our roads a safer place.

“The trucking industry continues to make great strides in safety, with each generation of trucks enjoying a host of new safety features,” David said.

“Our dedicated and professional drivers are also better trained and comply with a range of legislation designed to make sure our roads are safe for everyone.

“Our efforts are making a difference, with last year’s road toll the lowest in Australia since 1946. It’s time to celebrate our achievements and show Australia how trucking delivers.”
