A funding boost for heavy vehicle safety projects has been welcomed by the Australian Trucking Association. 

Fourteen heavy vehicle safety projects will share in $3.9 million from the latest round of the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative. The initiative is administered by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator. 

“Heavy vehicle safety is everyone’s responsibility and the number one priority, so it’s excellent to receive the support of Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and the NHVR for these life-saving initiatives,” ATA Chair Geoff Crouch said today. 

“I particularly welcome the funding for the #GetTruckWise Campaign, a partnership between the ATA and City of Greater Bendigo. This project will make a positive contribution to the road safety conversation by educating and encouraging behavioural change among light vehicle drivers. 

“The outcomes of this project will also assist in shaping the ATA’s national road safety campaign,” he said. 

Five of the 14 projects receiving the funding are led by ATA member associations, including: 

• Joint Business and Transport Industry CoR Education – Western Roads Federation
• Safe Systems: Transport CoR in Tasmanian Supply Chains – Tasmanian Transport Association
• Heavy Vehicle Safety around Ports – Queensland Trucking Association and Port of Brisbane
• Construction of Australia’s first roadside effluent disposal facility for livestock carriers – Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association, and
• A safety truck resource servicing Western Australia and the Northern Territory – Transafe WA

“The NHVR received 38 applications for funding, and to be selected for a share shows the high quality of work done by the ATA and its member associations,” Mr Crouch said. 

“If you would like to join the safety discussion or take part in these positive initiatives, I encourage you to join an ATA member association. 

“I congratulate the recipients of the funding boost and commend both the Australian Government and the NHVR for taking a proactive approach in addressing road safety concerns,” he said.
